Monica Otto I grew up in Watertown WI. After receiving many awards for my artwork throughout grade school and high school I decided I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. In 1996 I graduated from MATC with a degree in Graphic Design.
Soon afterward, I was hired by Lands End and worked there as a Graphic Designer for two years. I was then pursued for a Jr. Art Director position for a catalog company in southern California where I worked for another two years.
Having some experience in catalog design and printing, I decided to further my career by creating and managing my own California real estate magazine. This opportunity fine-tuned my skills in sales, personnel management, and business management. Although now a vice president of small company, I longed to leave the corporate scene and find something more fulfilling.
In 2001 I began apprenticing under a prominent fine artist where I learned the traditional skills of Renaissance Era Masters. Under his guidance, I began work as a childrens art instructor, eventually progressing to managing a school of about 100 children.
I now realize that Im not only teaching art to children, but I also help build their self esteem, social skills, and the confidence to succeed in life. I had now found fulfillment.
Curt Otto Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, I spent most of my younger years doing what I enjoyed the most; drawing, painting, and creating. My grandmother, an accomplished, self-taught artist, heavily influenced me to pursue an art education. After winning various art awards and studying at the Beverly Art Center in Chicago, I felt a natural progression after high school would be a continued education in art.
In 1989 I enrolled in the Graphic Design program at Madison Area Technical College, where I met Monica. Although I enjoyed using my artistic talents on the various assignments we had, I found myself frustrated with the structure of graphic design and left it behind to pursue an alternative.
In 1993 I put art on the back burner to begin a career as a project manager in the wireless telecommunications industry. Although successful for ten years I was completely exhausted and out of touch with whom I really was.
In 2003, I too shared Monicas interest in finding fulfillment outside of the corporate world. I took an opportunity to work with Monica for a short time at her school in California and found that not only did I really enjoy working with the kids, but it also helped me reach back to a time in my life when I enjoyed simpler things, like drawing, painting, and creating. |
